Aurora Forecasting Guide

Where can I see the aurora tonight?

The best locations are within the auroral oval, typically at magnetic latitudes between 60° and 75°, such as Tromsø, Yellowknife, Fairbanks, and Reykjavik. Real-time visibility depends on the Kp index, solar wind speed, and local cloud cover.

How is aurora probability calculated?

We integrate the NOAA planetary Kp index, Bz interplanetary magnetic field, and solar wind dynamic pressure. We then apply local darkness multipliers (astronomical night) and subtract visibility based on Open-Meteo's real-time cloud cover data.
